The News Line: Editorial TURKEY – FIGHTING TO THE LAST KURD! MANY KURDS are being killed in the ISIS attack on the northern Syrian city of Kobane, while Turkish tanks and troops are lined up on the Turkish-Syria border, just a few miles from the city.

The action on the Turkish border is confined to deadly clashes between unarmed Kurds who are seeking to break through the Turkish lines to support their comrades in Kobane, and Turkish troops and police who are killing and wounding them to stop them crossing.

Furthermore, in Turkish cities dozens of Kurds have already been killed in clashes with the police after they have risen up to demand that they be allowed to cross the border to enter Kobane to fight alongside their brethren!

With this policy Turkey is continuing its support for ISIS – for over two years it has allowed the IS movement to muster its forces in Turkey, to train them there, and then take the foreign fighters over the border to northern Syria and Iraq.

There has not been a single clash on the border between Turkish troops and police and the ISIS forces crossing over to their ‘state’.

It is now crystal clear that Turkey is using the ISIS movement to weaken the Kurds and to try and prevent the development and emergence of a state of Kurdistan. It is fighting ISIS right down to the last Kurd!

The Turkish ruling class still have their claim to the oil-bearing regions of northern Iraq including Mosul and Irbil and still have ambitions to refound their empire in the region.

This is why, for them, the main enemy in the region is not ISIS, with which it still has relations, but the the Syrian Baathists, whom the Turkish ruling class is determined to destroy since Assad unites Muslims, Christians and Kurds in a modern secular state – Syria.

The Turkish leadership has made it very clear that it views the decision of the UK and the US not to invade Syria with their own ground and air forces as a great betrayal, and that it considers that a historic opportunity was missed, in which they were prepared to play a full military part, to overthrow Assad, and then rebuild the Middle East under the direction of Turkey.

Meanwhile, the US-organised alliance against Syria and ISIS is breaking apart under the strain of its different component parts with their different policies and perspectives for the region.

The comedy/farce that is Vice President Biden’s political life has lifted the lid on the contending factions.

He made the mistake of publicly complaining that the difficulty in fighting ISIS was that the Turks, Saudis, Qataris, and the UAE were financing the Islamists, and that they were willing to continue with that policy since they were determined to rid the Middle East and the Gulf of Assad, and then Iran.

His revelations angered the Turkish imperialists and the Gulf feudalists who want to create a greater Turkey and new Qatars and Saudi Arabias in the land currently occupied by Iraq and Syria.

Such is the weakness of the position of US imperialism that Biden has spent this last week on his knees apologising to Turkey and the Gulf feudalists. The attempt to get the Arab feudalists and the Turkish military to smash ISIS is obviously fading fast.

The US started with air attacks on ISIS and these have now developed into helicopter gunship attacks on cities such as Ramadi and Fallujah in Iraq.

There is a logic to this process and it ends up with US and UK boots on the ground and a new invasion of Iraq and Syria.

With this perspective, the US and UK ruling classes are inviting disaster, since the workers of the US and the UK are determined to resist a new land war in the Middle East.

The big battles are directly ahead. Both in the US and the UK, the working class must be mobilised to support the Syrian and Iraqi people with general strikes to bring down any government that would plunge them into a new Iraqi-Syrian bloodbath.

Workers know that the Iraqi and Syrian people are not their enemy, and the future must be decided by united action by the Iraqi and Syrian masses to drive imperialism and its agents out of the region, backed by socialist revolutions in the UK and the US to liberate humanity by smashing capitalism and imperialism for ever.

This is the only way forward for the workers of the world and the oppressed nations!
