UNISON members taking strike action to defend their terms and conditions of service

UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis is urging a big ‘yes’ vote for strike action by its local government worker members in the ballot over pay which closes this Friday.

Prentis said: ‘The local government employers have made it very clear that their offer is final.

‘It will not be increased without solid and sustained strike action so we need a very clear “yes” vote in the ballot to show that we mean business.’

UNISON has asked for a five per cent or £1,000 increase on behalf of its 800,000 members covered by the National Joint Council (NJC) terms and conditions.

The employers have offered 2.475 per cent and 3.4 per cent for the lowest paid.

The union said this ‘is below inflation for everyone – which is why UNISON is urging members to reject the offer.’

Prentis added: ‘Wherever you work, whatever your job – make sure you vote and vote yes for strike action to try and get an improved offer.

‘Together UNISON’s 800,000 members can win.’

Around 1,500 members in the Passenger Transport Executive are also being balloted on co-ordinated strike action.

Employers have so far refused to respond to the trade union’s claim until the position in local government is clear.

UNISON is urging anyone who has not received a ballot paper to put in their request for a duplicate ballot paper by noon tomorrow.
