Demonstration in support of the locked-out Greyhound workers

THE Cork Young Workers’ Network is holding a protest in solidarity with the locked-out Greyhound workers outside The Peace Park, Grand Parade, Cork, at 3.00pm today, Saturday, 26th July.

Cork Young Workers Network spokesperson, Samantha Cooney, said yesterday: ‘As a group we think the treatment of the Greyhound workers is appalling and an injury to one is a concern for all.

‘We’re encouraging all who consider workers’ rights to be important to join us on Saturday at the The Peace Park, at the corner of South Mall and Grand Parade, near the War Memorial, to send a strong message to the owners of Greyhound that they must end the lockout.’

Secretary of SIPTU Cork District Council, Bill Mulcahy, said: ‘These men are not highly paid. They have been locked out of their jobs. They cannot afford a 35% cut in their wages.

‘Like all workers, the Greyhound men are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity. They must be allowed to return to their jobs on their agreed terms and conditions.

‘We’re calling on all union members in the city to come out and show solidarity with the locked-out workers on Saturday.’

The Greyhound workers have been locked out at the Dublin based waste disposal company since 17th June. Management at the company is attempting to force workers to accept wage cuts of up to 35% and has employed strikebreakers to carry out waste collections during the dispute.

SIPTU has 78 members in the company which has a contract to collect household waste for Dublin City Council.

The Cork Young Workers’ Network is an initiative supported by the Cork Council of Trade Unions for all people under 35 years of age with an interest in defending and developing workers’ rights.
